Clips and Clicks, Spring 2022, Honorable Mention, Sports Story: “Reflections in the Glass”
MIPA 2021-2022 AWARDS
1st Place, Sports Feature Story: “Reflections in the Glass”
1st Place, Sports Page or Spread: “Reflections in the Glass”
This story featured several students who did dance and their several different, and some similar, experiences. Working with an artist on staff, she created art for this article. Using these in the design, the page needed some color, so I decided to add in vertical light pink lines between columns, instead of our traditionally black lines, and horizontal lines to emphasize the pull quote. The “double” title was also meant to give a reflection illusion, playing off mirrors referenced repeatedly in the article.

1st Place, Alternative Story Form: “In the Museum”
This article is an alternative story form featuring the University of Michigan Museum of Art. The goal was to give a glimpse of current exhibits at the museum and share art! When coming up with this idea, right away I wanted the design to be colorful and photo heavy. After many drafts, I landed on large color blocks to tie the art and the text together and create a flow through the spreads.

Design of the Year, Fall 2022, Honorable Mention, Newsmagazine Page/Spread, Story Package: “Bloom”
Clips and Clicks, Spring 2022, Second Place, Magazine Page/Spread: “Bloom”
Our fourth edition last year’s theme was “Bloom.” In this, was a 20-page story package featuring pivotal, “blooming” moments in student’s and staff’s lives. In the story package, each person has a similar, close up portrait in black and white. We kept the cover black and white and used a different picture of the student to connect the cover to the stories. In this design, I took 16 of the 18 photos, including the cover. When planning the design, working with my co-Editor-in-Chiefs, we chose close-up, black and white portraits to represent the personal, unique stories shared.

Design of the Year, Spring 2021, Fourth Place, Newsmagazine Design: “Through the Window”
This was the first story package I worked on for “The Communicator.” I worked with the Print-Editors-in-Chief to photograph several students in the package and for the cover and inside cover. Working on this, I took photos for the cover three separate times, until I got the perfect photo for the edition. Working with the editors, I got a glimpse into the role and learned to photograph mindfully for designs.

Best of Show, Fall 2021, Tenth Place, Newsmagazine Design: “Return to School”
MIPA AWARDS
Honorable Mention, Story Package: “Return to School”
Honorable Mention, Front Page - Newsmagazine Style: “Return to School”
In Fall 2021, we went back to fully in-person for the first time since March, 2020, so we chose the theme “Return to School” for our first edition. We included pictures of each student with their story to get people and some familiar faces in print, especially since we were in-person and had easy access students and photos.
Edition 1, November 2022
This story package was from our first edition this year. Working with the art team from start to finish, we planned an art story where the characters shown repair and heal the heart throughout divider pages in the magazine. In the story package, students reflect on their healing moments. The stories are all accompanied with a small character as well.
Edition 2, January 2023
This was our Color Stories Package in the second edition this year. Each interview was prompted with a full set of Pantone cards where they picked one color, and they then described it and a memory they associated with that color. For the package’s cover page, I took individual pictures of each card, cropped the pictures and created a grid, in their original order, on Indesign. To counter the aligned, perfectly ordered cards, I scattered the writing and played with the colors. The color accompanying each story is the color each student chose along with the Pantone number.
