Leadership and Awards
As an editor-in-chief of my school’s newsmagazine, I have spent countless hours and many late nights in room 300 at Community High. Our production hours run from 2-8 p.m. for the staff, but it always runs later for the Print Editor-in-Chiefs.
These stressful, late nights have always been worth it; journalism has always been worth it. Being an EIC is much more than the magazine, the production nights, and the distribution days. It is leading and cultivating a community that is devoted to sharing stories and voices.
Our publication, The Communicator, wins national awards each year. Recently at the National Scholastic Press Association fall convention, we won their top national award, “The Pacemaker,” for our newsmagazine. During the ceremony, 26 of us on the trip instantly jumped up screaming as our name popped up on the screens. Together, we ran to the front, accepted the award, and then gathered holding the award and smiling for this moment.
As nice as awards are, they are not what makes our publication amazing. It’s the staff and the culture that editors before me worked to create and that I work to continue. In a leadership position, my goal is to produce the best work possible and help people see their potential. But as a leader, I always remember that the process matters more than the goal.
The process involves devoting my time to other people. During class, I don’t work on my own articles; it is my time to help other people. I help people create source lists; work with their transcripts to determine direct and indirect quotes; take their articles through the writing process; brainstorm creative titles and informative subtitles; create graphics and take photos; and use InDesign to put their work onto pages. All of this pays off when we distribute the magazine, when we win awards, and most of all when I see our staff open the magazine to see their amazing work inside.
